Senmuth - Pat Hof Neu Rog Ene Sis

Say And Then Repeat.

Senmuth has returned with his full-length release for the month of May. This album once again is more in the vein of his last few releases and is no doubt a bit of a task to listen to from start to finish. This is just another brick in the wall for an ever expanding musical gallery for Senmuth.
This album continues the trend of Senmuth's recent ambient output, but changes things up into a format that is a bit easier to swallow. While this record is once again very atmospheric and has a focus on ethnic percussion and synthes, guitars appear to be the main focus of most of the songs on this album, excluding Ösku í Heila and Volcanographia, which are mostly ambient tracks. The melodies on here are also a lot clearer to make out among each other than on other albums as well.
The use of guitars on here really allows for more diversity and a more digestible sound. Previous ambient albums Senmuth has released have occasionally bordered on the boring side of listening experiences, but when you get a guitar line like the one in P.H.N.R.E.S.: Neuroapathy, it makes the song so much more entertaining. The acoustic guitars on here are also very well performed, while they don't bring the head bobbing kind of aesthetic to those tracks, they add a very crucial atmosphere for this album, and sometimes even go into a jazzy kind of style. The guitars on here really do make this album so much more enjoyable than it could have been.
When put into perspective, the tracks that make use of acoustic guitars are far superior to the ones with electric guitars. The acoustic playing on here is just fantastic, in fact some of the best put to disc this year I would dare to say. Tracks like Ómun Og Segull and Hemi Art Sphere are so much more introspective and clean sounding that it puts a track like P.H.N.R.E.S.: Neuroanomaly to shame; but don't let that fool you into thinking that this means that the songs with electric guitar are bad, they certainly aren't, they just don't seem to have the same effect as the acoustic ones.
Overall, this is a really enjoyable album and one of the best Senmuth has put out this year. Definitely filled with enough variety to keep anyone entertained. If you're a fan of guitar work, check this out, or if you're just into Senmuth's other releases.
Overall Score: 8
